Where to Attach a Hoist to an Lq4 Block

I'm going to be pulling my engine in the next few days. Where is the best place to attach the engine hoist chains to the block?

  • I pull the intake manifold and bolt the engine hoist to the holes at the 4 corners where the manifold bolts in place. If you've only got 2 points, I believe the preferred technique is to use the alternator/AC bracket and there's a loop at the rear passenger side of the block where the engine harness plugs are are located. (At least, that loop is there on a N/A engine, I assume it's there on a turbo engine, too.)

Use a leveler. Leave the both manifolds, uppipe & turbo on the engine.

-Loop a chain link thru the black hook-type bracket, on the side of the a/c. Just discharge the system and roll the lines aside.
-Unbolt & roll PS pump out of the way, use (1) 12mm bolt to fasten there. (Grab some washers and use them)
-Final 2 locations are on the rear, where it mates where the case mates up with the trans. (Also 12mm bolts with same pitch)

    Thanks guys.

  • Many many many people have removed their engines by attaching (wrapping around) the intake manifold itself. It will hold.

I just looked around at the engine and picked a few bolts that looked strong enough and used those. I can't recall where they were.

I had thought about pulling it up by the intake manifold. I was just worried about ripping the bolts out, etc. I'm sure it wouldn't, but that's just one of the many fears of doing this for the first time.

Any estimates on how heavy the engine is (including manifolds, etc.)?

  • Without tranny, roughly 250-300 as I recall.

  • well the intake mani has 8 bolts total IIRC that should be well more than enough to lift the motor, i do it that way every time. maybe a suby tech will chime in and tell us how "they" do it. probably some fancy $500 tool that mag-levs the motor out of the engine bay or some crap like that.

  • You guys are crazy for hooking to the intake manifold... that is just plain stupid IMO.

I had some Grade 8's welded to some big nuts and I screw one in the front on the AC bracket and one in the rear on the bellhousing. Mine might not be the best but do not use your intake manifold.

Its fairly-thin, cast aluminum for christ's sake.

  • There are two very nice hoist points on the motor. One is the AC/Alt bracket and the other is the turbo heat shield bracket. If you dont have the OE heat shield bracket, just use a bolt of the right size directly through a link in the chain. Here is an example:

(Always check oil pressure after a build)

  • If I know I am pulling the manifold, I do that first, then bolt my hoist to 4 points....

If not, I bolt/hook it to two points opposite and yank away.

I prefer the removed manifold, but I don't always want to do that (clutch job, timing belt job...)
